D1/D2 bulb and socket?

I saw something about the diference in D1/D2 bulbs and sockets on the web a few years ago and now that I started my conversion I cant find it now. My question is, is there a difference in the sockets for a D1 and D2 bulb and if so what do I need to do to put a D1 bulb in a D2 socket? If I remember correctly you remove the clip/spring that holds the d2 bulb in and then modify the socket to hold the D1 bulb by trimming the socket to fit the tabs of the bulb. Any ideas? thanks.
